This special legislation will help the thirteen communities up the Wappinger Creek access Environmental Protection Fund support for projects such as much needed flood resiliency projects and water quality projects! Since our community has invested $5.7 million in replacing a water treatment facility, we are absolutely committed to protecting our water source from further damage and contamination from phosphorous laden runoff. We thank you Senator Terry Gipson NY for taking the lead on this issue by bringing a method for promoting solutions at the local level to the communities along the largest watershed in Dutchess County! The Village is also requesting from the New York State Department of Homeland Security that a study of the watershed be commissioned. The purpose of this study would be to identify where future flood resiliency and water quality projects could be implemented. There are hundreds of acres of public land along the creek which could stage projects like the demonstration project just funded in the Village through the Green Innovative Grant Program. In the Village, we constructed an ecosystem which increases groundwater recharge, protects residents from future flooding from minor storm events AND improves water quality! These projects and more infrastructure would now be eligible for funding if this important legislation passes.
