This story has been floating around the internets for a week or so. I was asked to comment so why not here? Why should we pay you - we get people to do our work for free is something we have heard before. Clients who expect work for free (or severely discounted) will only make the design community get hurt in the end. If you are making people money and people like what you do, you rightfully deserve to be compensated for your time and value. If you are doing it for free you arent doing it for the scene, you are ultimately hurting the scene and making art worthless. I dont expect to become wealthy from this (and trust me, I am not) but it is vicious to hear I should be doing work for free or asked to be paid a tenth of what the work will be sold for.
