This story is also true and sad. This is how my friend M was killed. We were on a hill top setting up demo charges to blow down trees to en large a landing zone, so 3 choppers could land at one time. We finish placing the charges and was cutting the time fuse and crimping the blasting caps. We were on the south slope of the hill, I was standing up looking back checking the det. cord. There was a blast I was knock to the ground. Then I heard other guys yelling for a Medic. At first I though that the demo had went off. I look back and seen the demo was still in place, then I realize that we had been mortared. I look down at M, and half of his head was gone. (draw a circle put 2 eyes in it then erase 1/2 of the circle from top to bottom) Just the right side of his head was there M wore glasses an half of his glasses was still on the good side of his head. A Medic came by and ask me if I was OK I told him yes and pointed to M. The Medic took the poncho off of Ms pack and cover him with it. He left to treat other wounded. This is when M sat straight up, then fell back down. I know it is hardtop believe, but it happen. This was a bad day for us we had five wounded and 2 killed. I seen our LT. run about 15 yards with only 1 foot, our machine gunner had some of his guts hanging out, a long gash in this thigh and his left arm tore up, and he lived, the other wounded had his right arm shatter, one wounded I never seen and you know my story hit in the legs. Gen. Sherman during the civil war said, War is hell Let me add to it, war is hell, but combat is horrifying and violent. Pray for our troops who are in harms way today and above all please pray for world peace.
