This story is full of horrors, with the fact that antibiotics will soon be useless, making even now very simple standard operations in hospital impossible probably being the least horrible in the larger picture. How about the fact that pharmaceutical companies havent managed to come up with new lines of antibiotics for more than 20 years not so much because they cant (although it is getting harder and harder and bacteria will inevitably evolve resistance much faster than that new antibiotics can be produced), but because they dont have a financial incentive to do so? Thats why an economist is now charged with finding out how to lure the industry with financial incentives and reduction of the risk of the companies losing money (or making less) with time- and money-concuming methods which are without guarantees of success, all of which of course means that more of our tax money will be funneled towards these companies. In other words, in this culture things being (perceived to be) necessary isnt enough for them to happen; they only happen if they make those who do it a profit. How f*cked up? How about that politicians and renowned scientists talk about this being a battle against evolution and against nature? Something we have to win by subduing bacteria and their fast evolution? A fight, a war... All that is thinking inside the box; the box in which humans and nature arent merely separate, but opposing entities, and where basically everthing opposes everything else and where live is based on competition to the max and to the death. This insane way of seeing the world can only lead to ultimate disaster. Not so much for the bacteria, but definitely for us. theguardian/society/2014/jul/02/cameron-superbugs-dark-ages-medicine
