This stuck with me today.... At my place of work I have an annual performance review and my weaknesses are usually highlighted as areas for improvement. Ah the Well Rounded Fallacy. A waste of precious time and resources. You see that duck walking there? What would it help if I assessed the ducks ability to climb a tree? Should I tell the duck that it has a climbing weakness and then send it to a tree-climbing seminar? How will the duck feel if it is foolish enough to accept my imposed assessment? Do you think a self-esteem issue might develop? Clearly, I should invest in helping the duck Become the best swimmer and diver it can be, and leave the climbing to the squirrel. What if I am an entrepreneur running my own business? Surely I have to be good at everything? If your talent is to create ideas, ask your partner to handle the selling. If your natural disposition is to connect with people and not with figures, hire an accountant... To cover your weak areas, partner with people who have complimentary skills... A secret for effective living is to develop a support system for your weaknesses, while you invest in and capitalize on your natural traits, talents and dispositions. Society, business and the media are quick to highlight weaknesses. And those are the very voices drowning out your Heart Song. Your job is to discover your Heart Song and then accept it exactly as it is. ~Stephen Shaw, Heart Song.
