This summer, the murder of Mike Brown in #Ferguson hit me very hard. I spent days in a fog trying to process and articulate what I was feeling. Teaching and playing with black and brown boys and girls during our summer camp, trying to help give them a sense of empowerment and agency... Only to realize (again) that our children have to grow up in a society that will fear them and victimize them with (near) impunity. One of my college interns, Laura Pérez saw me struggling. She held my hand, made sure I ate and texted me inspirational quotes and poems throughout the rest of camp. She was a friend and ally when I needed it most. In short, she stood in solidarity with me and mine. Today, I am Honored to do the same.
