This tears from my eyes -Okoro Uchenna (For my beloved country) We all are here today Because God favored us I tell you how; The wombs that bore us Were strong enough To carry our bulk And when we inflicted Pains on them Just by existing, The minds in the bodies That bore our bulk Were also strong enough To will away the obvious Or just bear it. When the contractions signaled That delivery was near, Mature and experienced minds Knew what to do Of course, experiences arising From attending to the “monthlies” For “a very long time” Taught them what to do And when they missed out on something There were other experienced hands To help out. Once, I remember now, A woman( I mean a woman), went through The whole process by herself. She’s had to practice And practice, learn and learn, master And master. Still on God’s favor, When it was time to suckle The breasts had developed so well That they could produce milk. We Didn’t have to starve or feed On animal milk. We Didn’t starve so we didn’t die As cute little things. We Brought smiles. We Didn’t feed on animal milk So we don’t have to behave like animals. While we grew, strong hands Held us, directed us, bathed us And fed us. They didn’t Grow shaky along the way They didn’t grow limp because They could bear the pain. These Hands washed. The hands worked. And when we erred, they didn’t Hesitate to flog (chide). That’s not all; I might not even Be able to say it all. When we were yet to be, The heads on the Necks of the bodies that bore Us, decided for us. What we Wore and ate, where we went, the Schools we attended, the philosophies That made us, they decided. We couldn’t do all of that For ourselves because we were Children. We had not known the Ways of the world. We relied on The strong minds to teach us. We were just discovering us. When the tides went rough And whirly, the strong minds That bore us before introducing us into this world, Knew what to do to protect us. And When they could not do anything To stop the pains, they knew Soothing words to ease. Now imagine God decided For one minute not to favor Us, and the wombs that bore Us were not strong enough. We could Pass the stage, say, if the minds were Strong enough. But God did not Favor us, and they were not. Say, they heard it is not An easy task and learnt to stay Strong, won’t they still Need experiences to steady shaky Hands and use their heads? Somehow, They still have to wait for God’s set time; yes, Their breasts will have to develop To produce the first food we Were fed. God favored us. God favored me. He will favor our descendants. #ChildNotBride.
