This, then. Friends who say ‘I know you’ without actually saying it. Because they know your top three favorite food items, your dislike for poor grammar and people who drag their feet, your obsession with dimples. Conversations that make sense only to you. That really really lame joke you can’t stop laughing over. The tears in your eyes and the stitch in your side because you feel like you’re going to die from laughter. The constant teasing. That knowing look in their eyes when you lie and they can call you out on your bullshit. That feeling when they point out something about you that you didn’t see yourself. The shock that you might be more transparent than you think. The ‘I have to tell them’ first instinct. About the good things. The bad things. Especially the bad ones. Horrible days turning into good days because you called them, texted them, ranted and swore and first they consoled and then they teased, and you laughed with them. This, the comfort of your troubles becoming lighter because they say, “Don’t worry, that happens to me too.” The comfort of well-honed conversations. The freedom to violently disagree and still remain close. Never having to worry about saying too much or too little. Knowing what the other person will say before they say it, and talking to them anyway. This, then. Knowing it might not last forever, but forgetting to care about the future. Making plans like you’ll be together forever. But who cares about tomorrow? We’ve got all this, familiar and brilliant and so very precious. We are here right now. And now is good. So, if nothing else. If I have nothing else, this. And this is more than enough. In no particular order. Amna, Zeba, Nudrat, Nisma, Haniya
