This time of year is always packed with significant life events - TopicsExpress

This time of year is always packed with significant life events for me, and this week in particular. In the span of four days I will have celebrated not only my own birthday, but the birthdays of both my best-bro Alex and my wonderful father as well. But today also marks another very important event, as well as the end of an era. Today I will be seeing what is theoretically the last Peter Jackson Middle-Earth movie for the first time for the last time (a confusing sentence, I know, but it makes sense). My relationship with the Hobbit films has been a complicated and ever-changing one; while the trilogy has so far ultimately been a disappointment in many aspects, its brought me joy and inspiration and courage in ways I would never have expected. Coming out of whats been among the most amazing years of my life and heading into a new and promising one, Ive been reflecting on whats been consistently important and meaningful to me over time. Its no surprise: the Tolkien fandom has played a unique role in my life. It has shaped me creatively, spiritually, emotionally, and in some ways even physically. I wouldnt be the writer, the artist, the dreamer, the pagan, the friend, the sister, the daughter, the person I am today without it. It has made me lasting friends and connections and inspired me to set goals and ideals and ambitions and then actually achieve them. It has given me hope, new understandings of beauty, the spirit of adventure, and knowledge of myself. Some of you might not understand this post, or how a fandom could affect my life in such a structural, integrative, and inalienable way, but I know there are those of you out there that do, so this post is for you, too. This is why I create, this is why I write: because someday, sometime, somewhere, whether it be in a year or in fifty, my work might give someone hope. It might be just one person, who picks up a dusty copy of my book from its one-print run in the back of a used book store, or downloads a 1-cent copy on their Kindle when theyre bored, and they might just like one line in the whole entire thing . . . but if that one person reads it, and if that one line Ive written gives them hope, or the spark of inspiration, it would all be worth it. You dont have to be Tolkien to inspire someone. Thank you all for your wonderful birthday wishes, and for being part of my life. You inspire me every day.
