This very historical piece certainly qualifies for the Poster From The Past for today! The three day long TRIPS FESTIVAL, at Longshoremans Hall here in San Francisco was the largest Acid Test in terms of overall attendance. This event marked the beginning of the Psychedelic Sixties in many ways. This event preceded Monterey Pop Festival by 4 Months, the Human Be-In by 1 year, and Woodstock by 3 years. This event really brought the Grateful Dead to the masses for the first time. It was also the most heavily advertised of any of the acid test events of all. This very RARE poster was circulated and was posted at the event approximately six weeks before either the Family Dog or Bill Graham even began their numbered poster series. This poster was one of the first pieces that rock artist Peter Bailey designed during those early days. While not really considered a psychedelic poster, it does offer a great solar image. Not long afterward Peter came to prominence with creating the first rock concert poster for Bill Grahams Fillmore Auditorium, which helped to make this period the beginning of a renaissance of sorts for the psychedelic art of the times that is still going on to this day! While the poster for this event is very rare and ultra expensive, handbills are much more common but still demand a hefty ransom when offered for sale. It was 48 years ago on this day back in 1966, that the TRIPS FESTIVAL started with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Loading Zone and more at Longshoremans Hall. This was just the second big gig for Big Brother that performed without Janis who was to join the band about six months later. This event truly marked the beginnings of what was to become a ground shaking movement that would changed the course of history in the Western World and later beyond.
