This video is an excellent example of how to prepare for a new baby coming in to the home. Dont know where they got that cool little noise making baby, but there are tons of sounds that can be bought off internet sites. SOCIALIZING, DESENSITIZING, COUNTER-CONDITIONING are really just exercises to help our dogs feel good when they run across things theyre not familiar with, rather than the new thing being a scary thing. All the Disney movies et al, and all the hype about fur babies and the like, have brought us to believe that dogs just know all things human. Theres no doubt that many dogs are able to perform feats of wonder, and I hate to be the one to destroy all those wonderful fantasies about our dogs, but, in reality ... dogs are a completely different species from us, plopped smack in to the middle of what could be a completely different planet from their own. We need to help them understand our world, and bringing a new baby in to our homes can be overwhelming, especially with all the new smells, sounds, and tons of gear that comes along with them. The principles of Socializing, Desensitizing, and Counter Conditioning apply to everything in our little dogs lives, and its extremely important to help the human/dog relationship. If more people did this sort of thing with their dogs - from the get go - far fewer dogs would be overcrowding rescues and shelters!!!
