This video which is brought to us all by TrackMan is a great explanation and illustration as to why a player must exit so much to the left (right handed golfer) in order to hit a straight shot. Just recently I have posted numerous swing of students that currently attend HHJGA. Quite often they arrive to the academy with a swing known as over the top. In those cases we actually focus on not feeling an exit left and therefore we work them away from the style shown in this video. This is only in an effort to improve their transition and down swing. It is never because we dont want the club to go left after impact its because we need to flatten their down swing plane and the best way to do that is to discourage an exiting left golf club. Once the player has achieved the proper down swing plane all of a sudden we start trying to work out the pushed flight to the right and teach the student how to start his or her ball on line. This is one of those instances where things often get confusing for the student. Students often feel uneasy and even put up resistance because they often love their new ball flight and hitting a draw is what they have always wanted to do. The thought of swinging to the left brings back memories of when they could only hit pulls and slices. However exiting left as shown in this video does not produce pulls. In fact you will still draw the ball if done correctly and the correct amount. Take some time and really try to understand what he is showing you. Keep in mind that the left movement he is talking about comes primarily from the rotation of your body. To properly rotate through impact You will need the arms and club to be properly sync up with the body as to not cause the body to stop turning through impact. Also understand why the flatter plane the club travels down on into the hitting area the more the club can go left and still not produce a pull. Understand that the steeper the down swing plane the less left it needs to go and the flatter the down swing plane the more left it needs to go to allow a ball to start on line and fly straight. Once again we encourage everybody to watch this video and truly understand what hes talking about because so often students think that if they swing left through impact they will pull the ball or they will slice the ball. That is not the case at all and hopefully this video will allow you to begin grasping the concept. Do not attempt to do this until you have learned how to have the proper length arm swing during the back swing in relation to the body (no lift) and dont attempt this until you have confirmed that your down swing has enough out to the right> direction in it so that the left direction he is discussing will incorporate into your motion. Because without enough out to the right> direction in your down swing the addition of the left he is referring to will cause you problems. This is for the player who hits a push draw that starts too much to the right of the target line and they would like to be able to start the ball more on the target line. Often its difficult for a player to get to a back left pin even with their draw because it starts out to the right about the same amount it curves. So in other words it acts as a straight shot. However if they could keep the same amount of curve in the flight but have the ball start on line then they could get to those back left pins. This is for that guy.
