This vintage postcard is a view of Second St. looking from Magnolia Ave. to Bond St. Second St. had trolley service but fewer stores than First St. However the three-story M. Levy and Son department store, seen on the right, was one of the largest stores in the city in the early 1900s. When Broad St. became the premier shopping district in the city, Emmanuel Levy and his brother Bernard built a multi-story department store there in 1923 called Levy Bros. In a large scale redevelopment, all the buildings and homes in the area between First and Second Streets, and bounded by Magnolia Ave. and Pine St., were razed for the construction of Pioneer Homes in 1940. Pioneer Homes, a public housing project, had 12 buildings with 405 apartment units. The 8 building, 250 unit, Migliore Manor was built in 1953 between Front and First Streets. and bounded by South Park St. and Pine St. The concept of high density, low income public housing eventually failed. Pioneer Homes and Migliore Manor were razed in 2002 and replaced with modern row houses, duplexes and detached homes. Some of the new housing can be seen on the right side of todays view of Second St. and Magnolia Ave.
