This was a huge posting earlier and my apologies for stealing other members photos but with all the new members it will be worth regurgitating Another huge fire in town was the Opera House movie theatre, in lower Tainui St, which was a very large, high wooden building and once it got going there was no stopping it. N.Z.R. road service buses were parked at the end of the building, where KFC is today, and men were pushing them away from the fire, obviously with no keys available. Dad got me out of bed and we ran the short distance from home to the fire, where we stood and watched it, alongside the petrol pumps at McGlashen’s garage, on the opposite side of Tainui St from the fire. At times, like when the flames went through the roof, and later the walls collapsed, the heat was so intense we had to turn our backs to the fire. The Opera House was replaced by a new theatre called the St James, which had no upstairs, but the floor just swept up in a curve from the screen. Seats were staggered in each row, so with the rising floor and the seating nobody could block your view.
