This was an amazing dialog in 2010....excellent back and forth with really no personal attacks. My opinion has not changed, I believed the money spent to transport soldiers bodies through Toronto was disrespectful and the money should go to the villages, towns and cities where the soldier comes from to create a real lasting memorial. It is the dialog, not really the subject, and, it was one of the better ones. READ IF YOU HAVE TIME, IT SHOWS WHAT WE ALL ARE CAPABLE OF. GREAT MIND OPENING DISCUSSION AND WE LEFT LIKING ONE ANOTHER. OSHAWA SUPPORTS OUR TROOPS EVERYDAY SPECIAL COMMUNITY EVENT ! Should we DO THIS ? FEEDBACK WANTED ! August 30, 2010 at 4:15pm A QUESTION to EVERYONE: I was thinking how often we see our community gather on the highways and bridges when a Canadian Soldier loses his or her life while in the line of Duty. Many other Soldiers never get the opportunity to see our appreciation for all of their hard work, and for their dedication to our country. Its a shame. All of our troops should be have a HERO status, not just when they have lost their lives, but everyday. This FRIDAY September 3rd, at the Simcoe Street Bridge, on the Highway of Heroes we will have thousands upon thousands of families passing through Oshawa on the 401, traffic will be moving slowly, and we could have an opportunity to send a message that OSHAWA SUPPORTS OUR TROOPS ! We could gather on the bridge, wave flags, hold signs, show our community spirit, and most of all, let everyone know, that we support our troops every single day. No politics, no election signs, just community spirit. Lets all put our differences down, and support this cause. Its just 1 hour. A number of organizers are ready to help promote this EVENT. If you would like to help, please call me 905 579 1462. 5-6 pm... This will be the FIRST event EVER of its kind in Canada if we decide to get this done. Can we get the community out ? Will YOU come and support our Troops ? Should we tell everyone that OSHAWA supports our troops, not just in times of sorrow, or passing, but every single moment. ? Should we show everyone that OSHAWA Cares ?Please give me some feedback on this. What do YOU think ? should we do this ? ITS A GO ! Press RELEASE ISSUED. Friday at General Motors is wear your red shirt to show support of the troops so I think this is a great idea and as this is the long weekend and General Motors is on Holidays that day perhaps we could get some of their support to wear their red shirts and stand proud on the bridges of Oshawa Friday night as everyone is leaving for the long weekend...... August 31, 2010 at 7:17am · Like Bruce Borland William, the politics entered when this unprecedented event was started by the Harper crowd using the bodies for a form of propaganda...the boys and girls who die in this misadventure, should be honoured in a respectful long lasting way...these event are orchestrated costly affairs that serve no purpose...and, come on people, these soldiers are a completely different entity to the WW1, 2....there is no similarity at all...the men who died to protect us back then were not volunteers seeking a good job with good benefits...they were starving and out of work and took the best opportunity for the moment, or, they were conscripts...one hell of a big difference from taking a good job that may, sadly, involve death...but so does construction, taxi driver, oil worker, fishers, the list of dangerous occupation with a far higher death rate and we are not standing on bridges for them..paring this event with the previous wars is disrespectful to the men who stormed the beaches against insurmountable odds, flew into fire, the Camp X people who went behind the lines, the nurses and doctors on the front...it is absolutely disgusting to be treating them as the same heroes...migod, one it was rumoured to have died when he rolled the truck when he was mind altered and everyone dutifully ran to the bridge...you actually honoured a drunk driver...this has nothing to do with my political beliefs, it has to do with common pride and if this is the best we can do, then our whole society is in trouble...I believed those who went to Vietnam and suffered were heroes because most were not regular army; I do not hold the same empathy for those in Iraq and Afghanistan as they are all regular army and should they survive, and the odds are in their favour, they return to very lucrative results...all you who stand on the bridge are grasping for something to be proud of while I was proud of the peacekeeping role that saved us from WW3 and was far more productive than what we have today...I am proud of Canada and do not have to stand on a bridge waving while my government, a government not by choice, parades the body of a young person who only tried to forage out a life and died for it...they are being used as are you....and I totally resent it being used as a campaign event. August 31, 2010 at 8:48am · Like Bruce Borland Louise, get real, I have a history book for you if you have not one in your library...nice political speech though... interesting what one will say or do to get elected...this war has nothing to do with peace...and if you read properly, you would understand that I never said not honour them, but not honour them in such a disrespectful manner....do you not have any empathy for the families waiting on the receiving end?...think they are really excited about this whole affair?...has anyone asked what they would prefer....I doubt it because it would not fit Harpers agenda...I know I would want my child home to hug and send on their way to hopefully a better place....what is Harpers agenda?...make people believe that there is a real enemy and they are killing our boys and girls, and people, we have to fight these evil beasts...well, people, this is the day of the internet, take some time to find out who these evil beasts actually are...what the innocents feel...believe me, we are perceived to be the evil beasts, not them...take that 30 seconds on the bridge on the net and educate yourself to find out our troops are being sacrificed for nothing...nothing but profit...ok...now tell me all about WW2 Louise...I lived with the men and woman that returned...and you know what, they did not want bridge ceremonies, they, the real heroes, did not even want to remember it....those that did, never left a desk....it was not the John Wayne everyone comes back a hero scenario, it was fear beyond human comprehension, things like missing in action did not mean they went for a walk and never returned, and even worse, many, the Hong Kong vets, returned to die very young because their bodies had been destroyed...no bridges for them, migod we cannot even get a day beyond a civil servant and bank holiday set aside for them...the schools even abandoned the day because the teachers had a better use for the day off...isnt there a line how soon we are forgotten...well this charade is the reason real heros are forgotten. Jacob, if the hat fits, then so be it...but please, lets talk, this goes far deeper than flag waving and people just do not get it...the Highway of Heroes is a joke, my opinion, got that, my opinion, only counts as 1...now, why a joke?... define hero...if someone driving down a road gets blown up, sad, and I do hurt for them...called empathy...but are they heroes?...if they are, then what about the man who dies saving his fellow soldiers, a man like Edward Dunlop who was blinded saving his men by falling on a grenade, the pilot who died giving his men time to bail?...those are heroes...do you see any highways for them?...do we stand on bridges for them?...this is all a product of the decline of teaching real history in favour of the alice in wonderland stuff taught in schools today. But you are right Heroes are not people whom help build schools for little girls that do not know how to read or write...that does not make a hero? The difference between this war and WWII is that it was a World War...this War is to help the people of Afghanistan recoperate from the terrorist attacks.I read your opinion and I accept it,but here was my opinion... August 31, 2010 at 9:29am · Like Bruce Borland Migod Jacob, we have to talk...I cannot write here because it becomes disrespectful to those who believe if I continue...it is a campaign event plain and simple and an offshoot of an even greater campaign event, Harper and the reform...the rest, well over coffee because I see a serious lack of history being taught in school...there is absolutely no comparison between these people and those who fought in wars...and I personally find it offensive to be comparing them to the WW1 men as my grandfather fought in Afghanistan, South Africa and was killed in France after returning twice after wounds...those are heroes...ok...Jacob, ever read a book called Dumming Down of a Nation?...good read and it applies to Lansing and Oshawa and many other industrial areas...we can talk and I will tell you real stories of real heroes... August 31, 2010 at 5:53pm · Like Bruce Borland Sandra, you know Sandra, if I thought there was the remotest possibility that you could even comprehend the difference, I would make an attempt but since your reading and comprehension abilities obviously suffer along with your historical knowledge, I will not make any derogatory comments towards you...you, my dear, are a classic indication of the education system gone bad...be sure you will not be turning down all those fringe benefits your husband gets...how could you possibly compare running around in a Hummer to anything real men suffered for the love of their country in real wars and not for a lucrative lifestyle...by the way, are we calling it a war now or an insurgency? And Jacob: There is no denying that there was plenty heroes in WWI and WWII...e on Jacob, no denying?....migod, man, there is just no comparison....it was a hell that none of us can comprehend but we must display empathy else we will repeat...it was the lowest point of mans existence and while I respect you as a young man learning, you have to understand the difference between a good job with risk as opposed to a young man like you, being taken, then shipped to a land he may never have heard of, maybe Galipoli, where if the guns did not get you disease would...no Hummers to run around in, just a gun, a shovel and maybe, if lucky, some maggot infested food...there is not a day goes by that I dont see kids like you, and think that if this new militaristic Canada, Harpers Canada, continues, I will see what I have feared all my life, seeing our young going off to the slaughter...not some backwater with no real enemy... Marissa, you are right and it will be my last post as long as the likes of Sandra dont tune in with useless insulting dialog...funny, if it was not so sad, her husband obviously did not have freedom of speech, freedom of expression as a reason for being in Iraq... September 1, 2010 at 1:11pm · Like Jack Snedden Bruce, youre way over the top on this one. First of all, the Liberals got us into this war-NOT our current prime minister. Secondly, to term the return of the remains along the Highway of Heros as Harpers propaganda procession is a complete misrepresentation of the facts. It is Canadian Forces proceedure that every body coming home undergo an autopsy in Toronto. The results of each and every autopsy provide valuable information in the design of safer battlefield equipment. Im proud to support this war because it was those Afghan bastards who flew a plane into the twin towers killing over 100 innocent Canadians under the direction of Osama Bin Laden. Im still haunted by the grizzly sight of seeing people jumping to their deaths from over 100 storys above the ground to escape the searing heat of the inferno. I also support a womans right to education, to marry whom she chooses and to show whatever amount of bare skin she chooses without being stoned to death. Bruce, I suggest that you read a little about Al-Qaeda and these Jihadist, fundamentalist idiots who have chosen to declare war on all non muslims.
