This was an interesting read for me. So many times, people ask me if our rescue pays for veterinary services. When I say yes, some of them are horrified, one refusing to donate to a rescue that lines the pockets of money-hungry vets. There is one local rescuer who ranted on her Facebook page that her vet killed her rescue dog because the vet had the audacity to ask for money to treat. And, of course, in distasteful but increasingly common Facebook-style, her minions rushed to reassure her that it was the vets fault the animal died, not hers for not taking a critically ill animal to the vet; not hers for taking in animals that her rescue cannot afford to treat. I know that this article is not about rescue; it is about private people understanding the costs of animal ownership and their responsibility in caring for their dogs. I also know that there will be a hue and cry that this makes pet ownership a privilege of the rich. The fact is that this article is about the realities of running a veterinary clinic as a business. Period. And the other fact is that people (and rescues) should have a plan to care for their pets needs. That is their responsibility, not the veterinarians.
