This was another education in classic anime, thanks to Neil Nadelman, a professional anime translator and an acquaintance from my frequent congoing days. This is a clip from Future Detective Urashiman, which is a fun and little-known but beloved anime from years past. Its directed by Koichi Mashimo. Mashimos done a bunch of other works, and perhaps his most famous examples from his filmography include DIRTY PAIR: PROJECT EDEN, a lot of the .hack shows, and my personal favorite, IRRESPONSIBLE CAPTAIN TYLOR, which will always hold a special place in my heart for creating one of the greatest characters in recent memory, the eponymous Justy Ueki Tylor. But I digress. Heres a capsule description of the show: _In 1983, a young man on the run from the police finds himself mysteriously transported to the year 2050. With no memories and newly developed superhuman powers, he finds himself recruited to join the Neo Tokyo Mobile Police Unit in order to help them take down a vicious crime syndicate known as Necrime. But will this man, now known as Ryuu Urashima, be able to take down the Necrime and find his way back to the past? Or will he be trapped in the future forever?_ This clip in particular is a nice little homage to Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, silent film in general, and the fine art of slapstick. But heres the other thing -- this was was animated in *1983*. Yes. This is over thirty years old, and the animation still holds up as solidly done even by todays slick CGI-enhanced standards, not to mention just being entertaining as heck. Why do I mention it? Because Neil informed me that The Anime Network will be streaming this show in the very near future, and I intend to watch it. Neil, remind me when this goes live, okay? :) #AYearOfAnime
