More Than Jewelry This story comes from Origami Owl employee James Saunders: Ever since I joined the Origami Owl team last September, Ive heard stories… beautiful stories about people Ive never met, whose lives have been changed through the power of a Locket. Yet I didnt grasp the reality of that until I experienced it for myself a few weeks ago. My mother-in-law, Christie, was diagnosed with an extremely rare and incurable cancer in May 2013. After the first round of chemo, the doctors seemed hopeful since the cancer was shrinking, and as a family we held onto our faith that everything would be OK. A few months later, though, in December 2013, our fears were realized when my sweet, loving mother-in-law was placed in Hospice care. Christie quietly passed away at home this past January, at the age of 46. A couple of weeks before Christmas, Christie called and asked me to order some Lockets for her. She wanted to give them to her six best friends. These women did everything together. They laughed, cried and shared many moments in their lives. These six Lockets would tell the story of each beautiful friendship. Christie carefully designed a Locket for each friend, with Charms that represented the group and the person individually. And she added one special Charm to each locket - one half of a Best Friend Charm. The other half of each went into a seventh Locket, which she kept for herself. At Christie’s funeral, I witnessed just how much of an impact our Lockets had on these six women. All of them wore their lockets to the service. There was one particular woman, though, who showed me just how treasured O2’s jewelry had become for her. As she sang a solo in the service, she held the little Locket hanging around her neck so tightly I could feel the love she has for her dear friend. Not only do these women wear their Lockets on a regular basis, but they buried the seventh locket, containing all six halves of a Best Friend Charm, with Christie. To me, this is the meaning of a life-long friendship and it shows that a piece of jewelry can become more than something pretty to wear; it has transformed into a living memory of what was, and what will be again one day. That is powerful! It’s why I believe in Origami Owl and the difference we make in each other’s lives every day.
