This was not a good time for Newark. It is rumored that it started because someone said the police killed a black taxi cab driver which later turned out to not be true - but it was a horrible two weeks for those of us who lived in Newark. I was nine months pregnant with my daughter Sharonne Bell and that Sunday night July 16, 1967 I went into labor while laying on the floor because I lived on 7th Ave and the National Guard were parked in front of our building and snipers were shooting at them. It was a mess. It is the closest thing that I can compare to living in a war zone.
