This week I ask my students to profile of a person from their community as a way to focus on an idea, personality trait or situation. Can they put a “face” on an important issue that needs to be addressed? Do they know of anyone who has been maimed or injured in a drunk driving incident. Can they discuss the implications of legalized dope in this country? Can they find anyone from the Sixties who stood with Cesar Chavez? Wouldn’t this be a cool place to start in the discussion of immigrant rights? My hopes are for my students to raise their levels of personal involvement and academic research in their writing. Me? I found something obscure but very interesting. Quite by accident. I’m going to write about the number of 1920’s Hollywood movie stars that drove south to Yuma and Mexicali to get married in the middle of nowhere. You didn’t know that? I’m going to explain the how and the why. But first, I’m going to drop by Lute’s Wedding Chapel in Yuma, AZ. There’s a guy there who can connect me to the past.
