This week I mistakenly put Advantix flea RX on my cat Belle-Noel, - TopicsExpress

This week I mistakenly put Advantix flea RX on my cat Belle-Noel, instead of my dog, Jolie. I realized my mistake, right away and washed the area with soap and water. She seemed fine and I left for several hours. When I returned home I found her running erratically, eyes and body twitching violently. I knew it was a reaction to the Advantix and bathed her entire body and rushed her to Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital. Dr. Sutton knew immediately what was happening and started her on a IV fluid to flush her body, as well as other medications for pain. He told me something shocking by saying, “Don’t be so hard on yourself I probably see a hundred of these a year.” During the next few days her liver enzymes went through the roof, and her body muscles suffered painful contractions that caused the tremors. I was shocked at the prevalence as well as the danger associated with something this avoidable. Yes, there was a warning on the pipette, in small letters “Do not use on Cats” and I have always thought I was a careful, responsible pet owner. However, I had separated the vials, and mistakenly mixed the cats and dogs vials. As a result I almost killed my beloved cat. It took four days of medical intervention to save her and secondarily a huge amount of money. I copied this directly from the Bayer Advantix site, regarding the chemical that harmed her. Permethrin: type I class of pyrethroide Mode of Action Permethrin: Pyrethroids affect the voltage-gated sodium channels. Pyrethroids are so called "open channel blockers" affecting the sodium channel by slowing both the activation and the inactivation properties. This leads to a stable hyperexcitation state which induces a progressive development of fine whole-body tremors, exaggerated startle responses, incoordinated twitchings of dorsal muscles, hyperexcitability and death of the parasite. I saw the description for “death of the parasite” was also the SAME SYMPTOMS Belle-Noel experienced. HOPES IT MAY HELP other pets and owners.
