This week Im in Artesia New Mexico providing free legal services to the women and children facing deportation. There are women and children in Artesia facing real danger if they are deported. This has brought back memories for me of when my own friend was ordered deported to Guatemala under a Reagan era policy to deny any asylum case from Central America that claimed persecution of indigenous people. Eventually that policy was challenged in court and the asylum seekers won. Now Im off to challenge the Obama era policy of we will deport you. How about we have a policy of giving people the fair hearings that our laws require and protecting them like our laws require. Not to mention its the right thing to do. If Jordan and Turkey can take in millions of refugees than so can the US.
