This week Im kicking off my eighth year with the Center for Biological Diversity. Right now in 2007 I was in Noahs basement researching more than anyone could ever want to know about gastropod differentiation (thats a polite way of saying snail penises). This was my first media story: “Despite the fact it’s been 674 days, 22 hours and 52 minutes since the Bush administration added a new plant or animal to the Endangered Species list, enviros appear indefatigable. Is it with a sense of defiance, humor or desperation that the Center for Biological Diversity issues a press release announcing: “Endangered Species Act Protection Sought for 32 Snail and Slug Species of the Pacific Northwest.” Explained Tierra Curry, a biologist with the center and lead author of the petition: “These underappreciated species perform many ecological services for humans, but without the effective protection of the Endangered Species Act they are likely to become extinct. Mollusks are an important source of food for other animals, are vital to nutrient cycling, and are indicators of forest and watershed health. Protecting them will help protect the environmental integrity of the Pacific Northwest.”
