This week and next week, Azusa Pacific University College of Music - TopicsExpress

This week and next week, Azusa Pacific University College of Music and the Artsis doing something pretty amazing. Three different ensembles, including Chamber Singers, UCO, and the Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra are holding open reading sessions, where they will read and record pieces written by composition students. Any composer who has struggled to get a performance and recording of something theyve written can appreciate what a unique opportunity this is, and for anyone who has studied composition and orchestration, you know how vital it is to learn from real players and singers engaging with your ink. It is a humbling and motivating thing to have 50-100 other musicians step in and try to make music with you. I so appreciate the spirit that pervades this place, that makes something like this possible. Instead of rancorous sniping and petty fiefdoms, the directors and faculty here are enthusiastically engaged in the bigger mission, and actively look for ways to lend support to the other areas of the music program. It comes from a posture of respect, and belief that the world of music is bigger than our place in it. Thank you to Christopher Russell, John Sutton, Phil Shackleton, and Michelle Jensen for making this possible.
