This week featured artist is Hock Choon Tan. Enjoy his interview and his art! 1. Can you do a short introduction of yourself? What do you do? I am an engineer by training & I work in the IT industry as an engineering manager. 2. What inspired you to sketch in the first place? I saw a friend’s sketch on Facebook about a year ago but didn’t really take too much notice at that time. On a subsequent business trip, I attempted doodling & my first attempt turned out okay. So whenever time permits now, I’d continue sketching, just purely as a fun hobby. 3. Why did you draw this particular piece for the Sketchtravel Singapore book? I used to live a couple of kilometres from my old secondary school along Bt Timah Road & also cycled around this place with my friends on weekends. I have great memories of those days; some of my best friends are from the secondary school phase of my life, and we still meet up regularly, a few decades on. 4. What are the art tools you used for this piece? My usual implements – Lamy fountain pen with Noodlers bulletproof black for the linework & Derwent Graphitone sticks for the shading. 5. What memories does your neighbourhood hold for you? Sketching the school compound, even though it’s from a temporary overhead bridge, reminds me of the old art lessons when we would sketch the very large shady trees & clock tower. I could still picture the hall, classrooms & various buildings in my mind as I was sketching - definitely a nostalgic experience. 6. Whats the hardest thing to draw for you? My few attempts at sketching people turned out pretty horrible, so I don’t think you ever want me to sketch your portraits. 7. Whats the easiest thing to draw for you? That’s not something I really think too much about. The sketches will usually take care of themselves as they evolve. Sometimes, they turn out unexpectedly nice. Other times, well… you live & learn.
