This week has seen the passing of a great northern artist Norman Cornish. Norman died at the ripe old age of 97 and was known as the last of the Pitman Painters. He worked in the mines of his native North East of England for 30 years but was part through their art. Normans work is a brilliant depiction of life in northernn pit towns and villages and in the mines themselves. I have just bought a couple of books on his work which is mesmerizing - a wonderful social history as well as truly expressive painting and drawing. There is a short film (about 2 minutes ) here on BBC North East about a collection of his sketchbooks being discovered and put on exhibition just a couple of years before he died. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-28040964 There is also an exhibition of his work currently in London and one planned for the autumn in Newcastle. There is also a brilliant Norman Cornish web site: normancornish/
