This week in Ben Davis Giants Boys Basketball history (March 19, 1994) Despite having key players Damon Frierson (fouls) and Ahmed Bellamy (getting four stitches to his mouth after taking an inadvertent elbow) on the bench with 2:36 left to go in the first half and trailing 24-17, the fifth-ranked Ben Davis Giants went to a 1-2-2 full-court press and ended the half with a 7-0 run, which was part of an 18-4 surge that enabled BD to take the lead and eventually stave off the #2-rated Muncie Central Bearcats 60-49 in the championship game of the Hinkle Semistate. Junior center James Patterson led the Giants with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Also contributing for BD were Reece Peacock (13 points), Ahmed Bellamy (12 points, including a slam dunk with 26 seconds to go in the game to put an exclamation point on the win), and Don Mallory (11 points, 2 assists and 3 steals) as the Giants won their second consecutive semistate championship. With the victory, the Giants improved to 27-2 and atoned for a 78-76 triple-overtime loss at home to the Bearcats in the regular season finale, which snapped a 30-game homecourt winning streak. Muncie Central finished the season at 24-2, having lost to Logansport in the third game of 1993-94.
