This week in Space history- October 27, 1961- Saturn 1 is launched. This was the largest launch to date, 3x taller than previous tests and using 6x more fuel. October 28, 2005- Cassini has a successful flyby of Saturn’s moon Titan. October 29, 1998- Space shuttle discovery launched for an 8 day mission with ex-astronaut Senator John Glenn on the crew. October 30, 1981- The Soviet Union launched the Venera 13 probe to Venus. After arriving, the probe survived 127 minutes in an environment with a temperature of 457 C and a pressure of 84 Earth atmospheres. October 31, 2005- Hubble space telescope discovers 2 new moons orbiting Pluto. November 1, 1962- The USSR launched the Mars 1 probe to photograph the surface of Mars. November 2, 19170- The Mount Wilson Observatory mounted a 100 inch telescope, the largest in the world until 1948.
