This week our prayer diary focusses on Vietnam The UN expert on freedom of religion or belief visited Vietnam in July 2014, and highlighted some of CSW’s main concerns about the treatment of religious groups in Vietnam. The visit itself was cut short when the Special Rapporteur received reports that some individuals he planned to meet had been “warned, intimidated, harassed or prevented from travelling by the police”. Ironically, by trying to stop the UN exploring the true situation of religious freedom in Vietnam, the government has just drawn more attention to the violations against religious communities, including ethnic minority Christians. •Thank God that the Special Rapporteur was able to visit Vietnam, after we had prayed and advocated for this to happen; •Ask God to protect religious leaders and others who met, or planned to meet, the UN Special Rapporteur in July; •Thank God for the courage of Christian pastors and priests who continue to speak out for justice, despite the risks; •Pray for comfort for those forced to flee their homes because of violent threats by police in connection with their faith; especially for those who have been separated from their families; •Thank God for the opportunity the UN expert’s visit has given for advocates to draw attention to violations of religious freedom in Vietnam; •Pray for wisdom for CSW to be able to make the most of this opportunity, to really make a difference to Christians on the ground; •Pray that the government will respond to the UN Special Rapporteur’s statement following his visit, with concrete changes reflecting a genuine commitment to freedom of religion or belief.
