This week the Arizona legislature opened its 52nd session on January 12th. The House and Senate members were sworn in and they, along with guests in the gallery, heard newly-elected Governor Doug Ducey deliver the annual State of the State address. The governor’s speech focused on Arizona’s budget problems and his education policies. Although he did not get into specifics, the governor laid out his agenda in which he believes a budget can be balanced without raising taxes and the desire to redirect education spending “back to the classrooms.” Governor Ducey stated, “If the problem is spending more than we have, the solution cannot be even more spending. Instead of demanding more revenue from people, I suggest we demand more fiscal responsibility from our government.” The governor is expected to deliver his proposed budget to the legislature today. The governor has already revealed several of his budget proposals; the elimination of the governor’s lobbyist office in Washington D.C., a state government hiring freeze, and the creation of an inspector general’s office to serve as a taxpayer watchdog by identifying programs, agencies and redundant areas to achieve savings. Lets hope for a strong, focused Governor, that will stand up against big government and will represent the people of this great state of Arizona.
