This week, weve marked the tragic passing of ESPNs Stuart Scott, who brought a fresh perspective, energy and style to sports broadcasting that enlivened the field over the last two decades. He died at 49 after a protracted battle with cancer. Scott burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s and became known for his unique catch phrases (Boo-Yah! and As cool as the other side of the pillow among them). But as good a broadcaster as he was, he should also be remembered more recently for reminding us of the power of a well-constructed and well-delivered speech. His ESPY speech this summer is something all communications professionals should watch. Its a master class in inspiration. The speech itself is full of substance. One line has already been widely quoted: When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live. Throughout, Scott weaves a story of grit, gratitude and persistence, consistent with the award he was receiving -- the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Scotts delivery, however, is as powerful as the content. Appearing physically frail, he is strong of voice, gracious and graceful. He brought all the skills of his exceptional broadcasting career to bear on this speech. The man could move us. And he did that night. RIP Stuart Scott, you left us too soon. You were a great broadcaster to all sports fans, and an even more powerful inspiration in the battle against cancer. If you missed it, grab a box of tissues and clear 6:56 in your calendar for this. youtu.be/K9cSX5XPY70
