This weekend I realized that I need to share this. Maybe it will help someone. I was in a close one this weekend. But only observation and experience helped me to get out without damages. Urban geocaching strategy: 1. In parks, bushes and on trial. Always appoint a spotter. He is the person walking in the front, no GPS and his task is to observe the area. Normally the person with bush experience and/or military training. He will divide the area in front of him in three zones. Very far, far and close. He will scan the area for any muggles and will warn the person with the gps. The person with the GPS will guide him towards the correct direction. Woman on average can do multi tasking. They can do more than one tasks at a time. Men is not so lucky. They can only focus on one thing. The brain of women is thicker between the halves and they are wired to watch the baby, hear the telephone ringing, stir the pot with one hand and scream at the cat at the same time. If men try this they will scream at the baby, stir the cat, burn the food and cook the telephone. One secret you need to understand. If a man watches TV and his wife is talking to him he will in all probability not even hear her. What I am trying to tell you that if you have the GPS in your hand it is not possible to watch the area at the same time effectively the way it need to be. It is a fact. Do not wander alone, get a mate and separate in two groups close to each other. You need to see each other. Muggling is tougher this way. 2. Two way radios. This is a must for cachers. In a high muggle area make use of two way radios. The one person again is the spotter. Normally he will be at the vehicle and he/she will scan the area while the other person will scan the area for the cache. Both have different missions. The spotter will warn of every risk in the area. Distance from cacher and direction they are heading toward you. The person with the GPS will focus on the cache. 3. Radios need to be worn high up on the chest. It does look official and the muggles will not be sure who you are and what you present. If you have vox enabled radios make use of it. It will transmit easy and it is hands free. Wearing it on your chest make it official. 4. Reflective vest will not be worn in a high muggled area or in the bushes. If you need to run or to hide you do not want to become target practice. Use reflective vest only next to the road inside the city. Outside the city and you are a huge visual target. 5. Contact number on your body. If you do get hijacked, muggled you will probably suffer from shock and in most instances you will forget contact numbers. Write the cell phone of your contact person on your arm with ink. If you need the number it is there and you do not need to remember it. In severe case the authorities can use the number to trace your next of kin. 6. Parks and trials are for people that want to relax. Muggles and muggers do know this and they will target these soft targets. Do not relax. If you are in a lonely park and you notice more than one person against a tree, rather skip. Easier to be safe than to be sorry. There are plenty more to find but you only have one life. You have a better chance in a park full of people. The risk is lower. 7. Escape routes. If you park your vehicle please use common sense. Never ever park your car in a area where you can not reverse or move forward. In dead end streets turn your vehicle around to face the way out. Hijackers will block your escape route and then you are in trouble. Watch the cars behind you. Is there anyone that follows you? Move away when this happens. Do not be ignorant. If you have two lanes never ever stop in the right lane. Stop in the left lane. Normally you have an escape to the left via a turn off if you do have problems. Do not park against the vehicle in front of you. If you need to run you will have trouble and you then first have to reverse and you lost the benefit of the escape route. Leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. 8. People at robots. Close you window and leave one inch open. More difficult to break the window. Make use of smash and grab tinting. It does work. If you have more money install bullet proof tinting. It is worth it. The villain will try to shoot through the window and his target will be your head or the upper part of the torso in worse case scenario. If you end in a situation where flight is not possible than follow the commands given to you. Do not be a hero and heroes need to die to become one. You can cache again. Do not stare at the person if you are in trouble. But do keep mental notes of his height, mass, skin colour, markings and face pattern. 9. GPS. Insure it. Do not flash it around in public. Look at the direction and distance. Count meters with paces and follow directions and correct your path and keep your gps out of sight as much as possible. Read the hint, listings, logs and size before you enter the area. Do not end at the cache location and then flip around your GPS to find information. Be prepared when you are at the cache. The GPS will revert your attention and you can be caught. Standing there flipping around the pages make you a soft target. A person looking around and who are observant is a difficult target. A person looking at a thingy in his hand that appears to be expensive is a soft target. Also remember that men can only do one thing at a time. 10. Plan your route and inform someone of the route. Stick to the route. Do not deviate from this route – if you are gone then someone will be able to trace your steps in order to find you. I hope this is of value. Geocaching is fun but it does have risk. Even at home you are at risk – the only thing you can do is to do something to reduce the risk.
