This weekend, The Seattle Times printed an editorial I wrote about our nation’s financial priorities. I’m inspired by finding parallels between the “old” history that I encounter in Europe and contemporary American life. In this case, while filming TV in France this summer, I was struck by stories of the Old Regime—the decadent 17th-century heyday of France’s elite aristocracy. Much as the peasantry toiled to fill their lords’ coffers back then, today it seems that many American employees are trapped in a hamster-wheel economy, forever prodded to generate bigger and bigger profits for the shareholders.
