This weekend the LDS Church held its semi-annual General Conference. A number of themes were addressed, including some contested or controversial questions like the nature of Mormon doctrine, the place of women in the Church, and the purpose and role of priesthood. Additionally, several Church leaders---including Church President Thomas S. Monson---emphasized the need to be generous and patient, loving and respectful to each other, even as we discuss and even disagree over difficult questions. In _Common Ground—Different Opinions: Latter-day Saints and Contemporary Issues_, the editors and contributors not only suggest that it is possible to respectfully but substantively engage one another from a wide range of perspectives on difficult issues, but the essays in the volume also model such a productive and generous mode of dialog.
