This weekend’s night sky (27 – 28 September) The planets - TopicsExpress

This weekend’s night sky (27 – 28 September) The planets Venus and Saturn can be easily seen in the west during and after twilight; lower down and near to the star Spica is Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. Mercury will climb higher towards Saturn as the weekend progresses. Last Quarter Moon was on the 27th and this leaves us with a lovely dark evening sky. The Pointers and Crux, the Southern Cross, are low in south west and the Diamond and False Crosses can be seen along our southern horizon. Canopus will be seen low in the south during the evening. In the northern sky we have three bright stars forming a large triangle; these stars in order of brightness are Vega, Altair (the highest of the three) and Deneb. Deneb is a part of the “Northern Cross” and large upside down cross that sits along the northern Milky Way. The Milk Way is running high in the western sky after sunset and during the evening it will sink lower towards the western horizon. The Scorpion/Hook of Maui will begin set around midnight as Orion and Canis Major rise in the east.
