This weeks edition of the Village Viewpoint Friday 9th May 2014 PETONE SOCCER MEMBERS GIVE SUPPORT TO OUR STANCE ON THE ARENA. IT COULD IMPACT ON THEM! READ ON We invite all our members and past players to join us this Saturday for our annual ‘Old Timers Day.’ We kick it off in the morning where the Petone Rec will be full with junior games going right through to our feature Swindale Shield match against the newly formed and well performing Upper Hutt Rams Club. Social activity commences at 12pm with drinks and lunch in the clubrooms. Come down and celebrate your past and watch the future, age is a great leveller and many of us are a lot better now than we were back in the day. We went into last weeks Premier match with MSP a little bit under strength and took a little too long to get into the match however there were a lot of positives coming out of the match despite the loss, the young guy’s will have learnt a lot from it. This week we are missing Sam McNicol, Willie Tufui and Adrian Barone through short-term injuries but welcome back Mateaki Kafatolu, Cam Incledon, Eugene Smith, Riki Flutey and (wait for it Plunks)…….Lewie ‘The Fly’ Marshall will be making his return off the bench as will his old partner in crime Jared Kahu. There is an obvious depth being built through the club and if we can get all our athletes on the field at the same time some very special things are going to happen. As an update on some longer term injuries we can report young lock James Blackwell, who has a broken thumb, is looking at a return for the Johnsonville game while Belgium Tuatagaloa is hoping for a second round week 3 or 4 return from his broken leg and arm. All our teams are on the Rec this week except for our well performing Senior Seconds who travel up to Stokes Valley but hopefully will return as a team to the club for the after match festivities. The Full draw for this week Premiers v UH Rams Petone Rec 1, 3.00pm Senior 1st v UH Rams Petone Rec 1, 1.15pm Senior 2nd v Stokes Valley Delaney 1, 3.00pm Brotherhood v Ories Petone Rec 4, 1.15pm Winstone Aggregates Colts Under 21 v UH Rams Petone 2, 1.15pm Winstone Aggregates Colts Under 20 v OBU Petone Rec 3, 1.15pm Villagers the Bye. Riki Flutey will present his British Lion’s and English Rugby jerseys to the Petone Rugby Club. Kia Ora Riki we are very proud of you. Congratulations to our ‘Happy Hooker’ Eugene Smith who will step out this Saturday for his 150th Premier match, a significant milestone for a player who always gives 110% effort and is a man the young guys can look up to. Good Luck to Petone players Jared Kahu, Nick Grigg, Tamati Samuels and Mateaki Kafatolu who have been selected in the Wellington Lions Trial to be held at Porirua Park on Monday May 12 at 7pm. Lardy is coaching one of the sides with Grant Wall as his manager. The Petone Rugby Club would like to wish proud Petone man Hayden Cripps all the best with his move to Japanese Rugby. Crippsy played for Petone and the Wellington Lions before moving down to play for Tasman in 2012, playing a major role in the ITM Cup team for two seasons. More recently Crippsy has shown his loyalty and love of the club by helping out as water boy prior to his departure and helping out some of the younger guys in the squad with their development. Good luck Crippsy and no doubt we will see you in the white saddle again some time down the line. We proud to say we have another NZ rep from the club and congratulate James McAnallen selected to row in the Under 21 test series against Australia later this year. James is competing in Under 21 singles, four and eight. Kia Kaha James. Overheard Last Week (True Story) The following discussion took place last week between a Mum and her son, a Junior in his second playing year and who was an MVP Prize-winner last year. Mum: Youve got training tonite! Jnr: Do I have to go? Mum: Yes, of course, youre playing on saturday! Jnr: But I played last year, I already know everything! Mum: Even the All Blacks have to train so youre going! Petone Arena Some casual observers may be sick of us pushing the campaign AGAINST but unfortunately we only get one shot at making sure this doesn’t go ahead. Simply put at best we lose half of our fields on Petone Rec, if the Phoenix gets their wish for a sand based training field. We will be left with one full sized pitch adjacent to the cricket club and the chance for our Prem team to play maybe six matches on the arena (between ground maintenance and Phoenix matches). We also lose several junior fields and the real possibility is ‘HOME MATCHES’ could be played at Fraser Park or Trentham Memorial. This scenario would put the existence of our great club in serious jeopardy. Another possibility is the proposed sand based training pitch being shifted to Petone Memorial Park where it will have a severe impact on the Petone Football Club with loss of usable grounds and having to share them with Phoenix Academy and Team Wellington along with the proposed Development and Women’s teams …..Yes this does have ramifications far wider than Petone Rec. In a show of solidarity three very senior Petone (Soccer) Football officials attended the latest Petone Community Board meeting to voice their personal support for the Rugby Club’s opposition to the proposal but couldn’t speak on behalf of their club as it hadn’t been discussed at management level. Speaking to the meeting the point was made by their Chairman that between the two clubs (both 115 plus years old) they cater for approximately 870 junior players - having enough grounds is as big a problem for them as it is for Rugby. Despite newspaper reports stating Council apologies being made to the Rugby club, we stress that we still fully oppose the arena proposal. PLEASE FILL OUT A SUBMISSION, Available on line or from council buildings, libraries etc or come down to the Petone Rugby Club or Petone Rec on Saturday where forms will be available. THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR APATHY WE MUST ACT NOW AND STOP THIS, PLEASE FILL OUT A SUBMISSION! Lament For Petone Rec The word is out they want to take that treasured swathe of green, And make a brand new stadium there, where football can be seen. The eateries and bars it’s claimed will hum down Jackson Street, As Phoenix crowds will flock to see the magic dancing feet. But pause a bit and think what problems this all shields, The loss of many a cricket pitch and many rugby fields. Where will the many boys and girls chase future rugby balls? To turn them into household names adorning hallowed halls. And what of other users too, who walk and run and play, Or walk their dogs or eat their lunch and pass the time of day? There’s parking and congestion too for those who live around, And higher rates and hidden costs in fine print will abound. And all for what, a few home games, which can be played elsewhere, Especially since the Westpac ground, was once the Phoenix lair. And we are all still paying for that and need no extra charge, For stadia that no one wants, although they figure large, In annual plans and Council views of how the Hutt should grow, But we don’t want to lose the Rec and we must tell them so. Richard Willis (father of NZ Olympian Nick Willis.) TVNZ Item Handle Club Last weeks winner was Membership secretary Annie Randal. This weeks draw will be on Saturday. Its never too late to join. Just see Jonny Cleland and he will hook you up. A quick thank you to all the members that have come on board with the handle club and a polite push for the last couple of outstanding invoices to be paid. It’s still not too late to join and your handles will be back dated to the start. Feeling thirsty? Bar Tab Draw Remember the $50 bar tab draw each week for financial players. You must in the club when it is drawn. Again we thank Bushy and PETONE ENGINEERING for their kind sponsorship. All the Best to a good friend and supporter of the club Bruce Chunky Hilder who goes in for a small op next week. Listen to rugby coverage every Saturday on Sport Radio 1503AM and 93.7FM See you at our ‘Pita Pit’ Old timers Day this Saturday. KIA KAHA KIA MAIA
