This weeks post is about family and life lessons......and another mention about grit.... I had a patient in the office within the last few weeks who had become estranged from his father.........because the parent had become jealous of his sons success. I listened to this story and was incredulous, as I have experienced something very different in my life. I have been truly blessed to work with my father for my entire career. Initially we were part of a bigger group, and now just the two of us for the last 6 years. Many years ago, I studied and was boarded in hypertension and cholesterol as subspecialties, became a speaker for several pharmaceutical companies, and then became fascinated with nutrition and you know the rest.......this blog and my video......and a very busy personalized practice. My father was never jealous.......As a lead in......my father is brilliant....remembers everything he ever reads.......has a kind, relaxed, and comedic rapport with his patients.......and remains just as sharp at age 72 as I remember when I started 18 years ago........ I recall many instances when his patients would say to him, Are you jealous of your sons success. I believe he quoted a religious text which said....Man is a jealous creature.....but...the teacher should never be jealous of his students success and the father should never be envious of his sons success. And all Ive known from him my entire career is pride...... So this brings me to my own family. I have one child who is the definition of the word grit. No ones kids are perfect......and certainly mine are not....but this post is a focus about certain positive attributes. I may have posted about grit before.......but I am a firm believer that reaching a long term goal (weight loss or better disease control for my patients.........but more importantly a successful career for someone younger) isnt about I.Q., bank accounts, etc.......but is about GRIT. Being gritty means not giving up. It means having a goal in mind and getting there......despite obstacles and failures and setbacks........its about keeping your head in the game even when it gets tough (as in resisting those food cravings.....but more importantly in school) I am posting a video below about GRIT......the video is a Ted Talk and is only 6 minutes long......and one of my favorites ted/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_the_key_to_success_grit?language=en But getting back to the first message.......one of my other kids has a brain that I COULD and should be jealous of......but again.......I would never and could never be envious of any future success he might have......I will only ever be proud. I joke with him all of the time that I am Terminator 1 and he is Terminator 2.....or I am the flip phone and he is the iPhone 6. (Child 3 is too young to tell.....but seems to be a hybrid model) So........I was certainly sad to learn that not all parents live by the rule I mentioned above..........but I will
