This woman is the Mayor who transformed Mississauga, Toronto in her 36 years of reign... She is still running the city perfectly at age 93 Hazel McCallion was first elected in November 1978, and is the longest serving mayor in the citys history. Early in her career, a psychic predicted that she would only last for one term of office. Instead, she was a successful candidate in 12 municipal elections, having been acclaimed twice and re-elected 10 other times. Her supporters gave her the nickname Hurricane Hazel because of her outspoken political style. Toronto Area however is one of the fastest-growing regions of North America with five million inhabitants, of which 700,000 reside in Mississauga itself. Debt-free city For over three decades (and while in power throughout that time), McCallion took pride in Mississauga’s debt-free status. But, in 2012, the city went into the red for the first time in 33 years and took out a loan of $450 million—a sum that would be taken out over the next eight years—in order to fix aging infrastructure, improve the transit system and roads and other projects.
