This year BPNW launched its First Veterinary Student Internship Program! Last year we only accepted 4 Veterinarians certified in Veterinary Acupuncture already. This Summer Dr. Valentine took on teaching and guiding two rising 3rd yr veterinary students from Oregon State University in Integrated Medicine. The interns worked alongside her in the clinic and out in the field. Each day they saw 7-14 cases per day 80% of which are the worst of the worst cases in Portland. Consequently, they had a long list of daily homework for both eastern and western medicine to solidify their learning. This program is especially important for the veterinary community as Integrated medicine is not being taught in veterinary school currently. Our hope has been that by teaching them a highly nuanced medicine and interview style it will make them better doctors. For example, for every one western diagnosis there are 7-14 Chinese Pattern Diagnosis possible for that individual and there are then 3-15 Chinese herbal formulas appropriate for that case even once you get the Chinese pattern correct. They worked hard learned a lot and could navigate the top 5 western differential diagnosis and started being able to recognize basic Chinese pattern diagnosis ! Great Job Margo Mercer and Cherise Hill!
