This year, as usual, I made custom pieces for Christmas. Im very happy with how everything turned out, but this piece made me the happiest because it has quite a story behind it. Years ago, when I was a teenager, my grandmother died. A couple of weeks before her death, we were at her house and she gave me a gift to take home. It was an oak root cane. I said Grandma I cant take this, you need it. She said I dont need it anymore. But youll do something with it. Make it look good, and give it to your father when he needs it. At the time, I wanted nothing to do with art. That was Kennys thing. Not mine. Since I started as a jeweler back in 2008, the cane has sat next to my bench. Through college, and in my own studio, this cane has been with me just in case I ever figured out what it was supposed to be. My fathers knee has become an issue. Hes in physical therapy, and is talking about a potential surgery in the near future. All of a sudden, I knew what it was going to be. My grandmother collected these small, wooden troll figures that were traditionally made in Europe. So I carved a troll face onto the front of the cane, and where the root was splitting, I inlaid turquoise to add some color. Now my dad can fix his knee in style!
