Thomas Greyeyes is a young Dine(Navajo) artist who recognizes his own creative purpose and is deeply rooted with his Dine culture. The culture clashes that native peoples have experienced are the sources that drive the artwork. Using site-specific graffiti installations, print and video art to convey anti authoritarian messages to the dominant society. Thomas honed his artistic practice to include political messages coming from the Indigenous perspective on colonialism, decolonization and protest. The work challenges Western ideas of what it means to be a human being and the stereotypical ideas of Native peoples in America. He often reflects his voice through his art on issues that affect not only the Dine but all Indigenous peoples and our struggles. Tom was arrested in 2012 after doing an art installation in Flagstaffs town square in protest of the Snowbowl Ski resort to make fake snow on The San Francisco Peaks. (Brief description: Snowbowl Ski Resort in Flagstaff aims to utilize a deal in which they would use reclaimed(sewage) water from the city of Flagstaff in order to create fake snow upon the sacred peaks for recreation. It would not only be a desecration but a health hazard to the environment). We are very proud of Thomas Greyeyes, he uses his gift of art to defend his people, mother earth, and speak up about the state of native america. He is also one of the men that if push came to shove, he would be one of the first in the frontlines protecting our land and people. WE are HONORed to showcase his powerful art this Thursday at, WE HONOR: Art of Activism in ABQ.
