Thomas Seddon Léhon, from Mont Parnasse, Brittany 1853 oil on canvas, 22 5/8 x 29 1/2 in. (57.5 x 74.9 cm) Thomas Seddon’s painstakingly precise brushwork and his choice of subject matter perfectly exemplify the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’s affinity for the faithful representation of natural beauty. Here we marvel at the artist’s ability to combine detail with a panoramic sense of the landscape as a whole—from the figures in the foreground, to the religious procession below, to the treetops on the horizon. Seddon places the viewer in the scene and gives us the perfect sensation of its reality. The artist worked on this canvas mostly on-site, over the course of six months. Right after he finished it, he left for Egypt and Palestine to sketch and paint with William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
