Thorpe High School provided the venue for Rapid’s third game of the season, against a Dussindale team coming off the back of a 5-0 win the previous week. Unfortunately for Rapid, their hosts were to produce another 5 goals in this one, with Rapid only able to find 3 in return. With a number of call offs, absences and injury problems Rapid had only the following 11 available: Pat Parke Martin Gardner Taylor Plunkett Orr Kobylecki Kingsbury Jones Weavers Rapid made a good start to the game, something they’re not always prone to. Jones in particular was impressing with some fine play on the left wing. Some neat interplay between Jones, Weavers and Taylor was unlucky not to see the latter have a better chance to open the scoring. Weavers was a constant thorn in the side of the home defence while the midfield trio of Orr, Kingsbury and Kobylecki worked hard to win the ball before starting forward moves. Just as it was looking like it might be Rapid’s day disaster struck when a suicidal back pass was easily intercepted by the Dussindale striker, who proceeded to calmly slot the ball home. The lead was doubled when Rapid’s keeper was slightly off his line by a curling effort from range. The wind playing it’s part in helping the ball swerve in at the near post when it looked like the goal scorer had initially tried to angle his effort more towards the far side of the goal. Dussindale’s third goal came when a corner played in with pace under the crossbar was lashed in to the net at the back post. Having spent a few minutes with their heads down while conceding that flurry of goals Rapid picked themselves back up and late in the first half they were given a lifeline. Weavers shielded the ball superbly before getting in a position to stand up a cross to the far post where Jones arrived to head home and reduce the arrears. Spurred on by the way they finished the first half Rapid began the second half with purpose and they soon managed to make it 2-0 when Weavers pounced on a loose ball from a Jones shot and kept his composure to put the ball into the net. And it was the same pair to be involved again in Rapid’s third goal. This time Jones delivered the freekick that Weavers headed home to notch a brace. Rapid had worked so hard to get back on level terms from being 3 goals down it was perhaps unsurprising that they started to run out of steam. With no substitutes available to offer fresh energy they were caught out twice by the home side pushing forward to regain the lead Rapid had done so well to wrestle from them. Despite conceding 5 goals in consecutive matches there were a lot of positives Rapid could take out of this game. They created numerous chances and played some very good football, backed up by lots of committed performances. GP
