Thought for June. In the last 10 years or so Ive encountered many time wasters. People seem to think being self-employed is a *side thing*. Ive gotten comments like - You can do it for free you dont pay rent, man cant you give me a discount, you dont have much bills to pay and my all time favourite - you need to get a man so you dont have to work. *smh*. The old adage says time is money, and I keep trying to inculcate, browbeat, persuade, convince whatever you want to call it............ I *work* for a living. One person actually commented on the time I spend on facebook. What they dont know is that 99% of the time I have 6 windows open - fb just happens to be one of them. I remember I was getting ready for a meeting and a person who is no longer my friend stopped by and asked what I was up to. I told him I was on my way to meet a client. Now, his next sentence got him a few expletives and a dont come back. Anyone who says they are you friend should NEVER say to you What kind of clients could you have? If you are going to waste my time - Pay me for it. I have come to hate the phrase Thank you for your time! Another issue I have is with Charities. They KNOW how to find people to get free work but when its time to pay the big bucks, they find someone else. I love my work, I get to be as creative as my never-sleep gray matter allows me to be. I saw a company charging $50 for a quotation years ago and I couldnt figure out why. I called and asked - the owner said Bus fare and lunch money. I laughed because I immediate understood what he meant. if nothing else, he was paid for the TIME he took, the gas he drove out, the paper he printed on and the ink he used, even the pen he signed with. Ive had the opportunity to work for some awesome people and they have stuck around, so its them I keep close to heart. (No I am not telling they know who they are). SO..... for all self-employed people, stop letting others waste your time. Its never worth it.
