Thought for the day: we are about half way through our anniversary trip to Rome and, so far, it has been a wonderful experience. Quite apart from the holidayness it has also been refreshing to be somewhere that is not in the least embarrassed to celebrate its faith in the public sphere. In addition to the Vatican and the hundreds of churches there are madonellas on almost every street corner and a real sense that faith permeates life. A sad contrast perhaps to our society which seems intent on sweeping faith under the carpet like an historic accident that should be hidden from view lest it embarrasses or offends someone.
