Thought of this as I rode my bike today. Imagine that, 64 years old and riding a bike for fun. Weird thought process here. Talking to my friend Dr. Larry Meadors about LTAD. We decided in the old days we taught LTAD, we both can remember actually teaching techniques components of agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction, strength, flexibility...etc. We called it Physical Education. As Dr Meadors said, I cant speak for you - but for me, I have learned better technique for all of these over the years - but - I will bet, we did the best we could at that time with the information available for us. I agree. In the old days: Kids were born and learned to crawl, then walk. Walking was a process of get up fall down and repeat until you figured it out and didnt fall down anymore. Probably bumped your head and got scratched up a bit without your parents being accused of child abuse too. Then you learned to run and jump so they sent you out to play for hours, without toys so you had to improvise. Climbed on walls and fell off a few time until you figured out balance and didnt fall off. That eliminated those bumps and bruises, again no child abuse filed. Then came climbing trees and falling out of those until you learned how to hold on. Grip strength and upper body strength developed out of necessity to live without bumps and bruises. Again, no child abuse filed. We played football during football season, basketball in basketball season, baseball in baseball season. Cross Country and Track and Field ( running. jumping and throwing things), we did that all year round. All this multiple movement developed mobility, balance and basic strength and helped develop the brain. We did fine in PE classes and in school because thats what we did all day as we grew up. Because we did all this we are in pretty good physical condition to play sports and be successful.......multiple sports by the way, because nobody specialized at age 6 back then. Today: Child is born and learns to crawl. Put them in a walker so they dont fall down. Child doesnt learn balance or develop core and hip/leg strength or joint stability. After learning to walk , we buy them electronic games and teach them to play video games and watch TV all day. They dont go out to play so they dont develop basic mobility, balance or strength. By sitting and staring at TV or video games they dont move around and develop the brain, We then decide they are out of shape so instead of multi-lateral development, we put them in a single sport all year to get in shape and earn a scholarship. When they fail we blame the coach in sport and teacher in the classroom. When the injuries come, we get a new coach and team because that guy doesnt know anything. By the way, we dont check the background of either coach to see if they actually have a proper background to develop your kid, because really he won 25 games last year so he must be good, and your friend said it so its true. Sort of like the Internet. Kid fails classes in high school, isnt eligible. We blame teacher, school district, and government. Your child doesnt go to practice as he should( playing video games and hanging out is more important) so looses playing time. Parents form a committee and get coach fired. That will teach that coach not to mess with you or your kid. So, where do we go from here?
