Thought provoking. One of the things I always strive for in our designs is to ensure lots of natural daylight. In architect speak we call this daylighting. Tough to balance with heat loss through the windows, but when you face those windows south the magic really happens. The suns energy - even on a cloudy day can come through the windows and passively heat your space - whether that be a living room, storefront or bank lobby. Hence the statement: the magic of south coined by John Reynolds, one of my professors at the University of Oregon. Even I was surprised by the amount of coal it takes to power a 100-wall light bulb. Amazingly scary actually. Because that energy becomes CO2 trapped in our atmosphere. And thats an invisible form of pollution which is over heating our planet - the one our children and grandchildren will inherit.
