Thought some of you might have a little interest in my drawing process. Excerpt form a recent blog : richardclaravalcontemporaryfigurativedrawingssculpture/blog/8/3/13 I have for a long time been fascinated by the possibilities of synthesizing two different styles of art, and the goal of my current work is to seamlessly fuse the realistic human figure with Abstract Expressionist gesture. I am still experimenting with various approaches to the mediums I have been using, charcoal and compressed charcoal on paper, in an attempt to find what works best for me in accomplishing my goal. It is surprising how many directions one can take with these. Just to mention a couple; I sometimes draw and shade the entire figure with charcoal and then use cloths to blur it outward from the figure creating gestures. Other times I start with compressed charcoal and simply go back and forth between drawing the figure and gestures with this one medium. Ignudo 19 was somewhat a breakthrough piece. I was foundering for quite a while with it until I decided to blend some of the gestural parts with a cloth, and voila, the whole piece came together. I like this piece a lot for it’s rather eccentric composition and also for it’s sparseness. Ignudo 9 is the best piece I’ve done and is closest to my intended direction. In it I first drew and shaded the entire figure. Then before adding any gesture I spent some time both visualizing this and making a couple sketches. I then blurred outward from the figure and added gestural lines. 8/3/13 I have for a long time been fascinated by the possibilities of synthesizing two different styles of art, and the goal of my current work is to seamlessly fuse the realistic human figure with Abstract Expressionist gesture.
