Thoughts! Are they Interpreters of Mind’s Malady? Humans are a species bestowed with the gift of thought, yet most cannot control their thoughtless thoughts. The mind abhors a vacuum, so these thoughts, emanating from the subconscious, stealthily invade the mind. Neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniya’s studies and treatment for epilepsy was by cutting the corpus callosum (bunch of neurons connecting the two hemispheres), resulting in the split brain syndrome where the two halves cannot communicate with each other. He found out that the right hemisphere (creative) responded to one set of thoughts and the left hemisphere (rational), without knowing the right brains intuition, would rationalize the actions the person took. V.S. Ramachandran, in “Phantoms of the brain”, says the left brain creates a belief system and relies on Freudian defense mechanism to repress, deny and confabulate - finally we become slaves of our beliefs. Addicts chase one more drink or dopamine rush and then rationalize their actions. So it is the interpreter of your thoughts that is the culprit. This is a complex philosophical subject beyond the ambit of neuroscience alone. The easy answers are usually wrong.
