The Richmond Times Dispatch just determined through Freedom of Information Act requests that the US Secret Service, which serves as a function of Homeland Security, had requested that police agencies use license plate readers to capture and collect information on participants at political rallies. The US Government claims the information was used to maintain security at the Presidential rallies during the 2008 election cycle. While there is certainly truth to this, the extent to which the information was analyzed and used, and whether Homeland Security is still in possession of this data remains unknown.
